These are difficult and uncertain times. We trust and hope that you, your family, friends and colleagues are well.
We wanted to give you a brief update about what we are doing to support Prince Edward County during COVID-19.
Food and health are essential. This is why our board launched a new fund with a $15,000 donation from The County Foundation Community Fund.
The PEC Helping PEC – COVID-19 Fund connects funding to community agencies that support the needs of vulnerable communities throughout the County. Our goal is to raise $100,000 for food banks, food initiatives and groups that provide food and health support in the County.
You can help right now. There are 6 ways you can donate online to the PEC Helping PEC – COVID-19 Fund. Please visit thecountyfoundation.ca/covid-19-fund to donate and learn more.
We are also working with Food Security organizations, groups and local government. On March 23, we took part in a Food Security conference call facilitated by Kathy Kennedy, executive director, Prince Edward Learning Centre.
Participants included Food To Share, Hastings Prince Edward Health, Prince Edward Learning Centre, The County Food Hub, and Emily Cowan of the Community Development Department, as well as councillors John Hirsch and Kate MacNaughton, members of Prince Edward County’s Food Security Task Team.
A network of local organizations that focus on Food Security and countless volunteers are actively supporting existing and new initiatives. Here’s a synopsis of some initiatives that people are working on:
- Assessing the current and evolving situation, in particular, current and anticipated needs for prepared meals, grocery items, volunteers, the necessary food safety protocols for distribution, etc.
- Establishing task groups to focus on finances and reporting, food sourcing, distribution and logistics as well as communications.
- Creating scenarios as well as a support plan for when increased demand impacts our local food banks.
- Identifying opportunities for individuals, groups, businesses and organizations to safely and securely donate and volunteer for these forthcoming Food Security initiatives.
On March 16, our board donated $2,500 to The Picton United Church Food Bank and to The StoreHouse Food Bank in Wellington in support of Food Security.
We know there are unmet needs right now in Prince Edward County. We are collaborating with local food banks, food security groups, council and many others. Together, we are working to support the County during COVID-19.
We need to raise $100,000 for food banks, food initiatives and groups that provide food and health support in the County.
