Food insecurity is a serious problem in the County, where an estimated 2,500 – 5,000 people are experiencing difficulty affording nutritious food in adequate quantities to sustain healthy lifestyles.  Through no fault of their own, those affected find they need to know where to find emergency food supplies, free meals programs, or free cooking classes in PEC. The Food Access Guide contains this information, and more.

Under a grant from the Rural Ontario Institute and funds from the Municipality and work group partners, the Food Insecurity collective is starting a 9 month project to:

  • Build public awareness about Food Insecurity.
  • Co-ordinate and integrate Education and Skills around using, preparing, and cooking, nutritious foods.
  • Coordinate and integrate access to free and low cost nutritious food in its many forms, and under various programs.

Action teams for each of the above three strategies have been mobilized.
