Help and Hope – The PEC Helping PEC COVID-19 Fund

$200,395 and counting…how 178 donors are helping people during COVID-19

Helping people. It’s the foundation of what we do. In the midst of the province-wide government mandated lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19, our board met virtually on March 23. Together, we established a fund to support the broader Prince Edward County community during this period of uncertainty. The board committed the first $15,000 towards a $100,000 goal during this meeting.

On April 17, the County Food Depot was launched by The Food Collective. Funding for Prince Edward County’s first Food Depot started with a COVID-19 grant from Community Food Centres of Canada and contributions from The County of Prince Edward and The County Foundation.

The Food Collective is sponsoring the County Food Depot. This local partnership includes Food To Share, Picton United Church Food Bank, StoreHouse Wellington and District Foodbank, the Municipality, the County Food Hub, Prince Edward Learning Centre, The County Foundation, Hasting Prince Edward Public Health and Community Development Council Quinte.

Since then, the County Food Depot has been complimenting the work of local food banks and providing supplemental food to people who are facing food insecurity during the pandemic.

Demand is growing during the darkest months of 2020

In recent weeks, demand for food boxes has increased. With government support programs shifting and, in some instances, ending, we are seeing more people relying on the County Food Depot.
