Members of The County Foundation were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Douglas MacPherson on February 4 this year.
A co-founder of the Foundation in 2008, Douglas combined his professional background in physics, chemistry and systems with his personal passions for the arts and politics to nurture its creation. He exemplified the Foundation we have today, which links a caring community with local causes that matter.
Please join us in celebrating a life well lived and a lasting impact in Prince Edward County.

“In particular I cherished Doug’s steadfast commitment to the idea of building a local community foundation. His generosity to the community continues through the legacy he has left within the foundation."
Former President Joan Pennefather remarked on his tenacious advocacy on behalf of the Foundation’s flagship publication: The Vital Signs Report. First introduced in 2013, this report draws upon local knowledge to measure the vitality of our community and help steer actions to improve our collective quality of life.
“I remember in particular his support, if not insistence, that the Vital Signs Reports would launch. Community meant something important to Doug as did the need for art and expression. His knowledge and support of art and artists was outstanding."
Doug epitomized the Foundation’s conviction about the power of community volunteers as an advocate for the restoration of the Regent Theatre and the development of the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival.
“Doug and his beloved Kathy were long time friends of ours and contributed greatly to our settling in the County. They were both lifelong community philanthropists contributing time and money to multiple local causes and interests."
Douglas had moved to Prince Edward County with his late wife Kathy (2016) following their respective retirements in 2003. More recently Doug had moved to Dundas Ontario in 2021 to be closer to family.
“We shall miss his dry wit and chuckle and our many long conversations about the art world” Carlyn Moulton reflected.
