The County Foundation is honoured to announce a new fund for Indigenous students in Hastings/Prince Edward and a number of Indigenous led organizations within the Mohawks Bay of Quinte area.

The Marjorie Sero Stailkovich Memorial Fund was established by Sero Stailkovich’s granddaughter, Marjorie Matthews, to honour her grandmother’s life, beauty, proud heritage and recognize and support the determination and dreams of other Indigenous young people. Sero Stailkovich was born in Tyendinaga and later married an immigrant from Serbia, Peter Stailkovich.

Matthews noted, “It was important for me to do this to honour my grandmother and the legacy she passed on.  The County Foundation was instrumental in researching the proper connections and for creating the process to establish this”.

As part of the fund a $2,000 bursary will be awarded annually to a graduating Indigenous student from the Prince Edward Hastings area pursuing post-secondary studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution or continued education through learning facilities or centres. Additionally, the fund will provide annual gifts to the following Indigenous organizations: Mohawks Bay of Quinte Kanhiote Library, Tsi Tyónnheht Onkwawén:na (TTO), Indigenous Victim Services and Enyonkwa’nikonhriyo:hake (Good Minds).

“The Foundation is honoured to be a part of this fund, working with Marjorie and the organizations this fund will be supporting has been a wonderful experience centered around continuous learning about Indigenous culture and community.”

Dominique Jones, Executive Director of The County Foundation
